The Golden Earring

 The Golden Earring

The Golden Earring

My most favorite band of all time is the Golden Earring, they are THE face of Dutch popmusic. It all started out in the year i was born, 1961, four young men from Den Hague started a band called The Tornado’s, the memebers where Rinus Gerritsen (bas), George Kooymans (gitaar), Hans van Herwerden (gitaar) en Fred van der Hilst (drums). They mostly played on schoolparties and their music is from The Ventures and The Shadows. But when the english band Tornado’s score a hit with Telstar they know they need to come up ith another name. The Hunters come out with a record called Golden Earrings and thats the name the four men choose for there band. In 1963 the first changes in the band are made, van Herwede leaves the band and Peter de Ronde takes his place. When the first beatsounds are becoming vocal and instrumental music is out the need to get a singer. They find Frans Krassenburg to be the singer and at the end of 1964 Fred van der Hilst leaves the band. During a concert in Scheveningen they get noticed by Frans haayen, he is a student and has a partime job with the record compagny Polydor, he gets them a contract with Polydor, later on in live he becomes the director of Polydor and stays the producer from the Golden Earrings until the 70s and stays there advisor until the 80s. In the 1966 they score a big hit with That Day and is followed with If you leave me now, Don’t run to far in that year Peter de Ronde leaves the band.  Its not before 1967 that Barry Hay joins the band, the Shocking Blues, a famous Dutch band in that time, also was interrested in Barry but he chooses The Golden Earrings, in the beginning Barry plays the flute and George Kooymans is the singer. In 1968 they release the song  Dong-dong-diki-digi-dong, and it becomes a hit. In 1969 they shorten there name to Golden Earring. Its when Ceasar Zuiderwijk joins the band in 1970 that they are complete and the band stays until today in this formation. They score hit after hit and my favorite once are ofcause “Radar Love”, who does not know this one, and “45 miles to go”, “Hold me now” and I “can’t do without youre kiss”. In the 80s there not doing so well and they think about breaking up, there producer wants them to go with a big beng and Barry Hay comes with the song “Twilight zone” what brings them an enormous succes and the thought of breaking up is gone. In 2005 i finaly got tickets to go to a concert here in Venlo, but at the last moment Rinus Gerittsen got sick and , but i will not give up i want to see them at least once hopefully they come back to Venlo or here in the area, and i will be there for sure.
