Alex Dies, Xander is born

5. Stand By Me

There seems to be an intruder haunting Drover’s. Moira is spooked by strange noises in the night, and discovers an open packet of biscuits lying on the floor of the kitchen. Possums? Then what is the noise in the laundry? The next day she and Tayler hear mysterious footsteps crunching on the gravel, but there’s no one there. Eventually they discover the culprit — a grubby, eleven-year old girl called Lily.Could she be from Kate’s mystery cave-dwelling family? Moira is at once suspicious, but the others counsel patience. Lily has a quick answer for all Moira’s questions, but when her dad, Frank, arrives to pick her up, Moira smells a rat. She follows him and sure enough, he floors it to get away, clearly hiding something. Meanwhile, Moira discovers that things are going badly for Phil at the truckstop, and she develops a mysterious, itching rash. She remembers a curse she put on Phil when she was struggling to forgive him, and worries that the curse is coming back at her, bringing bad karma. She knows she has to undo the curse in order to set things right, and discovers that means being honest with Phil about how she feels.

6. Close Enough to Touch

Alex returns home, but the new joy in Stevie’s life is not what anyone expects. Stevie awakes from a dream in which she is having trouble finding Alex to help her with their new baby. She puts it out of her mind quickly, for today is the day Alex returns from Argentina. Moira helps her set up a romantic picnic spot for their first supper together since the honeymoon. And then Stevie sets off for the airstrip to collect her man. On the way she buys cheap hay, and calls Moira to get it picked up. Moira says she and Tayler will get it soon. Alex and Stevie’s reunion is blissful and as they drive back home the banter between them is affectionate — and the issue of baby names rears its head. It’s been windy in the last few hours and a branch blocks their path. Stevie goes behind a tree to answer a call of nature. As she stands, there is an ominous crack above her. Alex pushes her to safety, but a large branch comes crashing down. It traps him, injuring Alex terribly!

7. Bringing up Wombat

Grief-stricken in the aftermath of losing Alex, Stevie decides to leave Drover’s Run. At Alex’s funeral, Stevie vows not to forget him and to keep his dream alive. In keeping with this, she moves her (still nameless) baby son away from the supportive aunties at Drovers to live at Killarney. Moving in, Stevie insists on keeping everything exactly as Alex left it, unwilling to let him go and start grieving. She goes ballistic when she discovers Marcus riding Alex’s Harley. She also insists on reproducing Alex’s Argentinean cattle breeding programme at Killarney, despite it being unproven in Australian conditions. Marcus goes along with her plans, believing it’s his duty to support her by stepping into Alex’s shoes. But with her baby son becoming more unsettled in his new surroundings, Stevie’s behaviour becomes more erratic and impractical to the point of threatening the financial viability of Killarney — and her son’s inheritance. When Stevie also decides to quit as Drovers overseer, to the shock of her       friends, Grace and Moira both try to talk sense into her. But it’s not until her obsessive need to fast-track Alex’s breeding programme causes her to be injured in a cattle crush, that Stevie finally realises she has gone too far.

8. Three Sisters

Stevie, meanwhile, is glad to see Jaz…she tells her their old tensions are like water under a bridge. Jaz is sad over her loss, Alex did a lot for her. Jaz volunteers to help out around the farm, but when she goes to get some jeans she discovers she’s picked up the wrong bag at the bus stop. After scamming a truck driver for a ride, and helping Marcus out of a bog, we discover Ben is Stevie’s cousin!!! The three sisters, meanwhile, get to know each other again. Jaz and Grace are still very competitive with one another. Grace leaves Jaz to muster a small herd of cattle, fully expecting her to fail, but this backfires on Grace when Jaz inadvertently mixes some of the cows with cattle from Killarney.
*the role of Jasmine McLeod is now being played by Edwina Ritchard. It was previously played by Anna Torv.

9. Damned

Jaz’s secret past is revealed when the girls protest a dam threatening Drovers. As Grace, Tayler and Dan mark out a field for the next day’s charity soccer match, Stevie drives up and announces the government’s plans to dam the Ramsay River. It will rob Drovers of most of its water supply. Grace heads into the study to ring affected landholders and almost walks in on a desperate phone call Jaz is having with a friend in Italy, talking about a court hearing affecting her showjumping career. Jaz goes with Grace to Selkirk’s to arrange a meeting and there she meets Frank, whose opinion about the dam is shot down by Jim. Farmers from East Nanjemup, who have the most to gain from the dam, including big-wig Terri Barker, attend the meeting, where the charity soccer match is turned into a protest rally. But Terri reckons the dam’s good for the east. She takes some convincing to see how bad it will be for the rest of the district. Softening, she and the others consider attending the protest match. Grace volunteers   Olympic-hopeful Jaz to be the face of the anti-dam campaign. Jaz tries to get out of it, but is forced into a corner. Terri later questions Jaz as to why she’s not training in Europe, and Jaz covers by saying her horse is injured. But the next day, Terri visits Jaz and tries to blackmail her into supporting the dam and making Drover’s accept the government’s compensation, she’s made some inquiries and knows about a scandal rocking Jaz’s career…

10. Mother Love

Tayler must face up to some painful truths when her mother returns. Tayler’s and Patrick’s happy domesticity is disrupted when Tayler’s mother, Jane, returns. Jane wants to set the record straight with her daughter, but Tayler is wary, owing to Jane’s previous appearance around her 18th birthday. Now, Jane wants to be up front with Tayler, to explain why she left, and why she stayed away for 16 years without so much as a word. Frank’s daughter, Lily, is distressed by the constant upheavals in her life. She wants a settled home, but she’s pretty sure she can only get this by leaving her beloved father to live with her mother. She turns to Tayler for help, but Tayler, too blinded by the anger she feels towards her own mother, advises Lily to forget it. Better one parent who truly loves you, than to go chasing after the one who abandoned you. Meanwhile, Xander has not smiled yet, and it’s worrying Stevie immensely. When Xander does smile, first, for Moira, and then for everyone in the house except Stevie, the Drovers women decide to keep it a secret.

11. Bright Lights, Big Trouble

A trip to the city to protest the dam is almost ruined by Frank’s hidden agenda. Grace, Jaz, Marcus and Frank head off to the city to confront the Minister responsible for a dam proposal that will take away their ground water. Marcus manages to get in to see Ayres and arranges a meeting for later that day. But instead of the face to face they’d imagined, Ayres leads them directly into a press conference. Meanwhile, Phil gives Moira a gift, the script of his musical — “The Girl from Gungellan”. Moira reads it and is impressed. But when Phil tells her the main character is based on her, she is overwhelmed. It’s Stevie and Alex’s first wedding anniversary but Stevie wants to forget about it. Moira dresses Xander in pink to help Stevie with her grieving. Stevie leads the others in a toast to Alex.

12. Love and Let Die

Frank’s life spirals dangerously out of control when Jaz breaks up with him. Jaz is taken aback when Lily reveals her dad Frank is talking about proposing to her. Jaz thought she’d put the kiss with Frank to bed, it happened in the heat of the moment, but now knows she was wrong. Meanwhile, Frank’s hopes for a stable family life take a pounding when he learns that his ex-wife has a new job in Queensland and intends to take Lily with her. Marcus is still searching through Bryce’s old papers in a last ditch attempt to dig up some dirt on Ayres. He and Grace go through every one of the archive boxes, but nothing comes to light. Feeling lonely without Alex, Stevie realises that she’s boring the other women with the gory details of raising a baby. Feeling that it will help assuage her loneliness to be around other parents in her situation, Stevie joins a mother’s club.
